As If It Never Happened
Interview with Kevin Pearce
By Hannah Dobbas
As we all know Kevin Pearce is one of the greatest snowboarders of all time. He needs no introduction. He has seen, the X Games, competition after competition, video part after video part, sponsor after sponsor, and an massive amount of loyal fans. The man has succeeded to really the highest heights. Even though KP was tragically injured in 2009, there is no denying that a whole other Kevin was revealed through his accident. The one that everyone absolutely loves. There is no denying that his support system is absolutely unreal. I RIDE FOR KEVIN. To be honest, when it comes down to it, that is really what matters. Yourself as a person, not how many competitions you’ve won or all the money you’ve made. It’s the impact that you have on people. And Kevin Pearce has done just that. I asked Kevin if I could interview him and he said ” absolutely… But can you ask me creative questions.” That comment in itself revealed what a cool guy KP really is. He didn’t want to dwell on his life changing accident or how great his life used to be. He wanted to talk about the now and that his life ” isn’t bad its just different.” I feel extremely honored that I was able to interview one of the most gracious and humble snowboarders of all time. KP is so much more than a professional snowboarder. He is an inspiration to life and damn when life beats you up get back on your feet because there is so much to live for. Kevin does nothing but prove that everyday through his gratitude towards life.
What is next for Kevin ?
KP: That’s a question I’m asking myself right now. Its crazy how my life has taken a 180 degree turn since this accident and now I have to totally change my life style. Its not bad, just different.
Who is Kevin without snowboarding?
KP: I’m the same as I was with snowboarding. I am still on the same level as when I was snowboarding now I am just involved in the sport in another way!
If someone came to you and said “snowboarding has fallen off the face of the earth”…what would be your next career?
KP:You know, I think it would be really cool if I could become a professional surfer. That’s one thing I’m still able to do and it is so so much fun. It’s gonna take a long time to became a pro but snowboarding is gone for me so I have some time.
What do you think is the goofiest trend in snowboarding right now?
KP: I think the whole tight pant fad is super goofy. I never thought that kids would snowboard in such tight pants. The other one that is even more goofy is the tall t’s. I’m not sure if that’s still going on but 2 years ago when I was riding so many kids were rockin the tall t shirts.
Where is your favorite place to ride of all time?
KP:So far my favorite place I have ever ridden is Japan. The people are so nice and the snow is so good. I have had the best powder days of my life there and am dying to go back.
What is cracking you up these days?
KP:People watching in L.A. I went over to LA the other day and the people are so in their own world there. It was so funny and so amazing to sit down and just watch
If you had to choose shark attack or malled by a bear, what would you choose?
KP: That’s a hard one. Cause if I was in a shark attack I would be in the water and if I was malled by a bear I think I would be in the woods. So they both are pretty bad but it would all depend on the location it was gonna go down. If I didn’t know the location I would jJprobably say malled by a bear
If you randomly ran into Obama what would your 2 cents input be?
KP:I think Obama is doing an amazing job and he’s a very very smart man. I don’t think my two cents would be very good but I would tell him to put a limit on how many kids you can have. There are too many people in the world today
Pretend you own a private jet … Where are you going and who are you taking?
KP: I’m going over to Japan to go on an epic snowboarding trip and ride that insane powder. I’m gonna roll with the FRENDS crew. There would never be anything that would make me happier
Finally, how do you cure cabin fever?
KP: Go ride Pow or do something to take your mind off it.
